Welcome to Kawaguchi, one of the first post towns on the ancient Nikko Onari Kaido highway, which once connected Edo (modern day Tokyo) with the temple and shrine-filled city of Nikko. Your guide will meet you at Shakujouji Temple, just a short walk from the station, ready to take you into a day in the life of a shogun traveling to Nikko to pay their respects at Toshogu Shrine. Generations of Tokugawa shoguns, who ruled over Japan during the Edo period, stopped here during their journeys. Your guide will give you an overview of this history, before taking part in a Buddhist blessing ritual. Then get a true taste of Edo cuisine, by enjoying the same meal that shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune ate during his visit to the temple on April 13, 1728. The menu was recorded in a historical chronicle, and an Edo food expert recreated each individual dish based on recipe books from the period. Finally, you will have the unique opportunity to try on a Takasagozome kimono, featuring elaborate patterns that were all the rage in the inner quarters of the shogun’s court. Most people in Japan have never seen, let alone worn, a Takasago-dyed kimono!

Transform into a skilled artisan by donning the same white costume as an Itamae (sushi chef)! Your first job as an itamae is to prepare your own wasabi for use in sushi. Be careful, or your tears won't stop flowing. The next step is to prepare sushi nigiri. First, you will practice making the rice. The way you grip the rice makes all the difference in taste. If you can do this, you are 50% of the way to being a chef. Once you can make the rice, let's put some ingredients on top of the rice! You will complete 8 different sushi combos including Japanese tuna, salmon, Edomae conger eel, seared wagyu beef, and hand rolls. Compare and contrast the sushi you have tasted so far with the sushi you have made yourself! If your sushi tastes better, you are welcome to make your debut as an Itamae (chef) at our restaurant! If just experiencing the sushi is not enough for you, we can also attach a GoPro to your head to capture a realistic and authentic video of your experience as a sushi chef. After the meal, you can also freely enter the counter and take a commemorative photo. You will be able to take home memories that you can only have here. Sake tasting is also available as an option. You can taste Itamae Sushi's original sake, etc

Our ancestors were shinobi samurai who started to serve Tokugawa Ieyasu (the first shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate) in 1582. The clan served the shogunate for 265 years. In 1868, the clan declined the invitation from the Meiji Government and became independent. We are the only lasting shinobi clan in Japan. We invite you to come to our clan dojo where real master practitioners and professional interpreters take charge of all workshops and seminars. This is good for people who want to get a deeper insight into our ninja and samurai cultures. We still handcraft our tools and weapons. Feel free to ask any questions as we have kept our shinobi samurai tradition for over 450 years. Our ancestors trained locals and their servants to be shinobi.(Ninja is a new word used in movies. Shinobi is the word which was commonly used in the feudal times,) The term "shinobi samurai" is not well-known, but you can be one of the few who knows the history and shinobi philosophy and mindsets. The shinobi samurai trained ninjas and lead ninjas as their mastermind. You will wear a ninja outfit to learn ninja techniques and learn samurai sword techniques and manners in samurai garb.
