-Wagashi is traditional Japanese confectionery that expresses the seasons. Wagashi is characterized by colorful designs and beautiful craftsmanship, each created by hand by artisans. -Learn about the history and culture of Japan Wagashi is a unique food to Japan and strongly reflects the Japanese spirit of appreciating the four seasons, and it is said to have a beauty that is similar to that of wabi and sabi. - “They are too beautiful to eat. The first thing that strikes you when you are confronted with wagashi is how beautiful they look. They are filled with a delicate and gentle charm that is immediately recognizable as handmade, expressing the four seasons. -They reflect the Japanese people's love of the four seasons and their sense of beauty. Wagashi value the “seasons” so much that we cannot talk about them without mentioning spring, summer, fall, and winter, and express the seasons through three elements: appearance (design), ingredients used, and names. - “Delicious” is written as beautiful taste. First, enjoy it visually, then imagine from the name, weave a story, and enter the world of taste. Wagashi is not something that is just served and then taken in a snap.

Enjoy boat-ramming of the Okuribon Festival. The boats square off in pairs and are rammed against each other at the nose. Participants smash together, shouting and waving as fireworks go off overhead. The Boat-Ramming (Butsuke-ai)Ceremony: Each of the yakatabune that take part in the ceremony is prepared by the residents and shopkeepers of a different neighborhood of Yokote. While the boat frames are reused from previous festivals, every year the residents must fashion new straw hulls and fittings, a process that takes up to a month. Each of the participating neighborhoods builds a yakatabune, which must be carried from its home neighborhood to the dry riverbed of the Yokote River. On August 15, the boats are lined up during the bon odori so that visitors can see them up close. On August 16, the boats are pulled down to the river for the sending-off ceremony. This is followed by the “boat-ramming” (butsuke-ai) ceremony, which has become the highlight of the Okuribon Festival. The boats are brought back to the bridge, where they square off in pairs and are rammed against each other at the nose. Representatives from each neighborhood remain aboard the boats as they smash together, shouting and waving as fireworks go off overhead.

This is just a great thank you to Ruriko-sensei and her student Yuki-san who just made my whole day unforgettable. I always look for experiences that are somehow authentic and not just a tourist attraction. This tea workshop was exactly what I wished for and even much better. I felt so welcome and in this private lesson I learned a lot not only about Japanese tea culture as such but also about many local artists and craftsmen who play an important part in the whole tea experience. I believe this was the best tea I have ever tasted and the food and sweets were also delicious! どうもありがとうございました!

Welcome to Tokyo, Japan! If you have chance to come to Tokyo, not only enjoying sightseeing, but we recommend you try one of Japanese traditional artistic activities. Join us making delicious and beautiful "Wagashi", traditional Japanese sweets. Different from workshop at a room in an apartment, you can experience real genuine one at a small, quaint, local, real Mochi shop in Shinjuku, led by a Japanese Wagashi artisan. For this reason, many national and international celebrities have also become our customers. You will be making some pieces of seasonally inspired "Nerikiri", a kind of Wagashi made of sweet white bean paste and MOCHI. First, watch closely and learn while we demonstrate how to make Wagashi, then it's your turn to try your hand at Wagashi making. Delicately form the colored dough into various shapes by hand and carefully add lines with tools to perfectly portray "the seasonal beauty of Japan". Even if you have little experience in creative activities or cooking, we will carefully guide you through the process.
