Unique English-speaking tour dedicated to the fascinating culture of Iriomote and the Yaeyama Islands. Let's have a walk through one of the oldest villages on Iriomote island, Sonai village, and its historical places including a traditional Okinawan house and a shrine. During the walk, I will introduce you to the history and religion of Iriomote island. I will share many stories about local people's way of living and worship. Iriomote is not only beautiful nature. A secret tradition is still alive that most tourists are not aware of.
First, we will introduce ourselves to the gods of the island and learn about local shrines. Next, visit a traditional wooden house, and learn about its construction and the rituals held inside. We will see a very old well, a previous village location, hear its story, and learn about religious festivals. On the way, I will teach you about edible plants. If time allows, we will also have a look at a nearby village, Hoshidate.
After the easy-paced walk, let's enjoy a refreshing sip of herbal tea prepared by a shaman while looking at an amazing view of the ocean. We will watch videos of local events and festivals, listen to original songs, and look closely at traditional banana thread.
