✔ Learn how the people of Rikuzentakata have faced and overcome past natural disaster, and how they look to the future
✔ Visit the “Miracle Pine” (Kiseki-no-ippon-matsu), a symbol of resilience and hope for the region
✔ Place an offering of flowers on the memorial to honour those who lost their lives on March 11, 2011

Check-in to your lodging at Ofunato Hot-springs.

On March 3, 2011, a magnitude 9 earthquake and devastating tsunami hit the coast of North-Eastern Japan, taking with it entire cities and communities. The coastal town of Rikuzentakata in Iwate Prefecture was one of the most heavily affected areas.

In 2019, a new memorial museum was opened in Rikuzentakata to function both as an educational centre to spread the message of disaster prevention to future generations, as well as a provide a spiritual space to honor the memory of all those whose lives were lost or whose lives were changed forever.

On this tour, you will have the opportunity to hear first-hand stories of survival and recovery from a local guide as you tour the memorial museum.

Lodging plan

Check-in to your lodging at Ofunato Hot-springs.
You will stay in a traditional Japanese style room (2 people to 1 room) and have full access to the hot-spring baths with ocean views! Included in your stay is a full course Japanese style dinner of local cuisine and tasty breakfast the next morning.
