For more than 400 years, mountainous Hakone was the most difficult part of the Tokaido Highway, a land transportation route that connected Edo (modern-day Tokyo) with Kyoto. Today, however, Hakone is only 90 minutes away from the capital and is easily accessible by bullet train, private express train, and highway bus. Despite its proximity to one of the biggest cities in the world, Hakone is also a global geopark with a rich natural environment, and its unique volcanic terrain and verdant mountains mean it is home to a number of endemic plants and animals. In addition to the lush atmosphere, there are many sightseeing attractions in the area including sightseeing boats that run along Lake Ashi and a ropeway near the sulphureous vents of Owakudani Valley, as well as many cultural facilities such as art museums and golf courses. To travel to Hakone, you will board the Odakyu Railways luxury Romance Car Limited Express train.(approximately 90 minutes), and you could spend a comfortable time observing the train window. After arriving in Hakone, first we will take the bus along the Old Hakone Highway to Amazake Chaya. After that,Let’s enjoy a short trek along the Old Hakone Highway, which was built in the Edo period, before returning to the shores of Lake Ashinoko by bus. Our next stop is the Narukawa Art Museum, which has a small garden overlooking Lake Ashi. You can feel the elegant breeze blowing from Lake Ashi on the benches in the garden. If the weather is fine, you will be able to see Mt. Fuji over Lake Ashi, and you will want to release the shutter unintentionally. After lunch, we will visit the “Hakone Sekisho Ruins,” where the government office that checks the arrivals and departures of travelers to Edo.
