This workshop takes place in a lovely old house, with an equally lovely owner. You get to choose your own (almost finished) chopsticks, and basically you will sand them with sand paper, then polish them. While that is less hands-on work than at other workshops, I think the reason is the material used - these are made of something nicknamed "iron bamboo", and that's one of the best materials for chopsticks. So while your actual contribution to the final product may not be all that much, what you get are actual high quality chopsticks that are as durable as they are a cool souvenir!

当たりが柔らかく、香りの良い「京都銘木 北山杉」のお箸作りと、型紙を使って絵柄を染める友禅のお箸入れ作りのセットです。 さくっ、さくっと軽快に木を削り出すたびにほのかな香りが辺りに広がります。 そんな空気が流れる京町家の一室でお箸作りに興じてみませんか？
This was a nice experience where you get to create your own chopsticks basically from scratch, by shaving and sanding them from more or less raw pieces of wood. Finally, you can also decorate a little bag to carry them. In total it took around 2 hours for a completely handmade souvenir, and I had a lot of fun. The only potential downside is that the wood used is a very soft one, which makes it easy to work with, but that could impact the durability of the chopsticks. So treat them more as a souvenir and care for them properly.

主な産地は海南市の「黒江地区」で徳川御三家のご城下として繁栄した和歌山県に伝わる伝統工芸品。 会津漆器、山中漆器などとともに全国三大産地の一つと言われています。 三大漆器ともいわれる「紀州漆器」の職人が教える、「漆」を使った自分だけのお箸づくりです。 絵具や墨ではなく「漆」でデザインを入れます。職人が直接教えてくれるので初心者でも安心です。 完成したMｙ箸で食べるご飯は、きっと格別。 ～当日の流れ～ ①お好きな箸を選んでください。 ※お箸の種類で価格が変わります。 ②漆で絵や文字を描いたら、その上から金属粉を蒔きます。 ③サッと拭うと一瞬で、描いた漆が金色に変身！ ※漆を使用するのでかぶれにご注意ください。
あんなに、お箸に絵付けが難しいとは思っていませんでした。両親の金婚式の思い出の１つとして、両親と主人と一緒にさせていただきました。教えて頂いた、ハヤシさんが親切で、とても賑やかなひと時を過ごすことができ、大変嬉しかったです。お箸が届くのを楽しみにしています。ありがとうございました。
