[Conveniently located calligraphy class in the heart of Kumamoto City] Suiko Calligraphy Class is located in Kamitori Street, near Kumamoto Castle. Experience traditional calligraphy in a tatami-floored Japanese-style room, just like a local. I'll translate your favorite characters into Japanese and create a sample for you, so you can write it on colored paper and take it home as a souvenir. Calligraphy equipment is available for free rental, so you don't need to bring your own. I'm a calligraphy instructor with over 30 years of experience, teaching children and adults alike. I speak basic English, but I use a translator as needed, so it's not a problem if you don't speak Japanese. Up to six people can participate at a time, so larger groups will have multiple lessons. If you have any questions, please send me a message.
This was a fun experience in a friendly atmosphere where I got to create my own calligraphy souvenir. What looks deceptively simple actually is more complicated than you'd think, and it's good to have some time for practicing. There was a little bit of a language barrier so the teaching part was somewhat rudimentary and I mostly just tried things out, but I still had a lot of fun and produced my one-of-a-kind calligraphy! I showed it to a few native speakers and they could read it, so I will now proudly hang it on the wall - success! :-)

This is just a great thank you to Ruriko-sensei and her student Yuki-san who just made my whole day unforgettable. I always look for experiences that are somehow authentic and not just a tourist attraction. This tea workshop was exactly what I wished for and even much better. I felt so welcome and in this private lesson I learned a lot not only about Japanese tea culture as such but also about many local artists and craftsmen who play an important part in the whole tea experience. I believe this was the best tea I have ever tasted and the food and sweets were also delicious! どうもありがとうございました!

Enjoy a calm and intimate introduction to Japanese tea culture through seasonal wagashi making and an Omotesenke-style tea ceremony in a small, semi-private setting. In this 60-minute experience, you will first make a simple seasonal wagashi while learning about its connection to nature and the changing seasons. Afterward, you will take part in an Omotesenke-style tea gathering, where you can practice basic guest movements such as entering the tea room and receiving tea. You will enjoy two bowls of thin tea (usucha) prepared by the host in a quiet, traditional tea room. This experience is designed for beginners and those returning to tea, with a gentle, hands-on approach rather than lectures. The group size is limited to a maximum of four guests, creating a semi-private and relaxed atmosphere where each guest can fully enjoy the experience. ________________________________________ Additional Information • Maximum guests: 4 (semi-private experience) • Children below elementary school age are not allowed to participate or attend • What to bring: White socks • Dress code: Western-style clothing is acceptable (mini-skirts and low-cut tops are not allowed)
